About The Channel
The English Channel, also known as La Manche, is a narrow arm of the Atlantic Ocean that separates southern England from northern France. It borders several departments in France, including Calvados, Manche, Pas-de-Calais, and Nord. The English Channel covers an area of approximately 75,000 km², is about 560 km long and 240 km wide at its widest point, and its deepest point is around 172 meters, with an average depth of roughly 120 meters.
The theoretical minimum distance is just under 34 kilometers. However, due to strong tidal currents and winds, swimmers can often drift much further during their crossing.Crossing this sea is challenging due to its turbulent nature and strong tidal currents. In fact, numerous international teams have been stuck in Britain for months, waiting for the green light from the UK Met Office, only to be held back by unfavorable weather conditions. The uncertainty is frustrating for swimmers, as they can't pinpoint the exact start time or day. The Met Office typically gives them a four-hour window of favorable sea conditions. However, many swimmers have come tantalisingly close to reaching the French shore, only to be thwarted by powerful currents and tides. The tidal currents in the Channel change every half hour, and can sweep swimmers off course by 10 kilometers or more.
